Three legal situations

- establishing a death fact requires reliable evidence of a specific death
Timing and evidence
- the last confirmed contact and start of the relevant period are checked
- police, search, military-unit or service-investigation material is collected
- the event, witnesses and applicant’s legal interest must be explained
- a missing-person notice does not by itself prove death
After judgment
- the judgment may support state registration but does not replace the registration step
- the judgment can be cancelled if the person returns
- property consequences then require separate review
